Health Sciences
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Combine an aging population with a growing number of patients entering the health care system because of government reform, and it’s easy to see why the demand for health care workers has outstripped the supply. The Health Science program at North Country gives you the opportunity to gain broad exposure to the field while you weigh various career options, with classes in nutrition, first aid and chemical addiction. Hands-on experiences, such as going on-site with a care provider in Intro to Health Sciences, give you real-world perspective on the field.At the same time, you’ll complete required courses necessary for transfer into a bachelor’s degree program, such as biology, chemistry and anatomy, while rounding out your education with classes in core subjects such as math, English and the humanities.Your faculty advisor will work closely with you to ensure you pick the appropriate courses for you to transfer to a four-year program matching your interests.

Human Services
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: From time to time, all people need help. Helping others is the essence of human services. As a student in our Human Services program, you will develop the foundational skills and knowledge that support effective helping. Courses focusing on human services and counseling skills are supported by liberal arts offerings including psychology and sociology. Community-based agencies that serve the most vulnerable including children, the poor, the elderly and the developmentally disabled host our students for field trips, volunteer opportunities and as interns. These real-world experiences prepare you for work directly in the field and/or transfer to complete a bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services and other related majors.
CAREER POSSIBILITIES:

Chemical Dependency Counseling
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: North Country’s Chemical Dependency Counseling program prepares you to help individuals, families and communities coping with the scourge of addiction. In addition to coursework in counseling, psychology, pharmacology, and human services, you’ll work in the field with substance abuse counselors serving the North Country. This required internship puts you on the front lines of the fight against substance abuse; participating agencies specialize in in-patient and outpatient counseling, adolescent treatment and substance abuse prevention.Graduates of the program will have fulfilled the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services requirements to complete 350 hours of education and training, and are eligible to apply for status as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) trainee.

Criminal Justice
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Criminal Justice Program at North Country blends an introduction to criminal law, procedure and law enforcement operations with a host of sociology and psychology classes in order that you don’t just learn what crime is – you gain a better understanding of what causes it and how it might be prevented. You’ll have the opportunity to see theory come to life in your second year, when internships are available with the New York State Police; the Lake Placid, Malone and Saranac Lake police departments; and the Federal Correctional Institution in Ray Brook.
CAREER POSSIBILITIES: Municipal, county, state and federal law enforcement, Corrections officer, Commercial loss prevention, Conservation/ environmental agencies, Parole offices, Private investigations, Private security. Some career paths require additional education or training.
